Brief history of the ranking
The origins of the ‘Chambers&Partners’ ranking date back to the late 1960s and early 1970s. At that time, Professor Laurence Francis Orbach and attorney Michael Chambers founded ‘Orbach&Chambers Publishing’. Almost twenty years later – in 1989 – a new branch of the publishing house was established, ‘Chambers&Partners’, and a year later the first legal ranking was published under this name. Admittedly, at that time it covered only law firms operating in the UK, but within a dozen years the brand had become a global research firm for the legal services market. Today, it is recognised as the most important award that lawyers and law firms can receive.
